Applying for Admission to the Preschool Program
The preschool program at Sidney Ledson is in high demand, and we are able to accept only 5 in-person students under the age of 3 years 8 months in this class. Application to our preschool class is on a rolling basis depending on availability of spots. Due to the limited number of spots in this class, there are some requirements for admission that our youngest applicants need to meet. As the program we offer is a structured and academic one, our preschoolers are required to demonstrate readiness to be introduced to formal schooling in a classroom setting. The applicant would be required to do a one-day in-person assessment at the school (the principal may require a longer assessment period upon review). The purpose of this assessment is to determine the child’s readiness for an academic program, their current level in foundation work (math, English, reading), their readiness to respond to teacher instruction and to focus on the task at hand, as well for the teacher to observe the child’s classroom etiquette to ensure they are a good fit for the program. The assessment can be scheduled for either during the academic year, during the March Break week, or during the summer months. The fee for the one-day assessment is $200 (payable via Interac e-Transfer to sidney.ledson@bellnet.ca). Also required are copies of two most recent report cards that the child may have received if they attended a school or child care centre. If the child has not had any formal schooling or been enrolled at a child care centre, we request the parents to provide a brief description of their current ability, if any, in foundation math, reading, and writing as well as, of their performance in any structured lessons that the child has participated in. Finally, admission is conditional on preschoolers being fully potty trained or almost 90% there.
Applying for the Kindergarten Program
Space permitting, applications for admission into our Kindergarten program are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are required to do a one-day in-person assessment at the school. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the applicant’s current level in foundation work (math, English, reading), their readiness to respond to teacher instruction and to focus on the task at hand, as well as their classroom etiquette to ensure that they are a good fit for the program. The assessment can be scheduled for either during the academic year, the March Break week, or during the summer months. The fee for the one-day assessment is $200 (payable via Interac e-Transfer to sidney.ledson@bellnet.ca). Also required are copies of two most recent report cards that the applicant may have received if they attended a school or child care centre. If the applicant has neither had any formal schooling nor been enrolled at a child care centre, we request that the parents provide a brief description of their current ability, if any, in foundation math, reading, and writing, as well as of their performance in any structured lessons that the applicant has participated in.
Applying for Grades 1 to Grade 6
Most enrollments are recommended for September of the academic year, however, space permitting, applications for admission into our grade classes may be made on a rolling basis. Applicants are required to do a 2-5 day in-school / online assessment to determine the suitability of our program for them. Applicants are assessed for math and English to determine their current levels in these subjects, gauge their learning capacity, observe their classroom etiquette, and observe their ability to follow the class routine and teacher instructions. The fees for the 2-5 day assessment ranges from $170 – $425 (payable via Interac e-Transfer to sidney.ledson@bellnet.ca), depending on the number of assessment days scheduled. The decision for admission will be based on the assessment at school, the report cards from previous schools, and IEPs and / or assessments provided.
